Hunger and thirst after righteousness denotes a sincere desire and longing for the things of God and godliness, and those are indeed wonderfully blest characters whose hearts continually go out to God with such spiritual cravings. The apostle Paul said, "Our conversation is in heaven" (Philippians 3:20), by which he meant that their whole life, both in word and in deed, was centered in and around "the things of the Spirit of God." Both the words of their mouth and the meditation of their heart were acceptable in the Lord's sight (See Psalm 19:14), and they were always seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, for these meant more to them than life itself. The person who hungers and thirsts after righteousness not only craves new or fresh evidences that he is clothed with the imputed righteousness of Christ, but he sincerely desires to be right and to do right. He wishes to be led in paths of righteousness, with no other view than the glory of God. His soul hungers for the proclamation of the true gospel. He loves to hear the wonderful works and ways of the Lord preached in the demonstration of the Spirit and of power. He delights in conversing with spiritually minded people on scriptural subjects, and is often found searching God's word for more comfort, greater enlightenment and a richer understanding of His will. One of the many precious promises of God's word is that those who thus hunger and thirst, "shall be filled". He who gives the hunger and thirst also satiatesI it, so that there is a double blessing. And He who gives His people a spiritual appetite has also given them an Inspired Volume of truth to which a lifetime of study may be profitably devoted. It is an inexhaustible well from which living waters have been drawn for many centuries, and still there is no less supply than at the first. There are times with those who draw from this well when it seems that it is dry, but this too is for their good, for it keeps them always going back to it in hopes of another time of refreshing. |
