"He that is mighty hath done to me great things" (Luke 1:49).

Happy are those who feel as did Mary when she uttered these beautiful and expressive words. And yet how inadequate do words seem when we think of how good the Lord has been to us and how great are the blessings that He has bestowed upon us. Who could begin to express the wonderful blessedness of possessing eternal life? This alone far exceeds even the blessedness that was Mary's in being chosen to carry the precious Christ-child in her womb. As great as that blessing was, what would it have availed her if she had not possessed spiritual life? In actuality, what real meaning does life have to those who find their only source of joy in material things and who have nothing but contempt for God and godliness? To put it in Bible terms, "What doth it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

How blest we are if we have been brought by the mercy of God to love Him and to find our chief delight in Him! What a great thing this is! No life is so happy as that which is devoted to His worship and service. Oh that we all were more spiritual, more heavenly-minded, without being pharisaical! Oh that each of our hearts glowed with such heavenly love and humility that we constantly radiated the glory of God! Oh that our bosoms burned with holy zeal and we all yearned daily for the hallowed atmosphere of the house of the Lord! Oh that our minds and hearts were always deeply impressed with, and ever conscious of, the fact that "He that is mighty has done to (us) great things!" If it were so we would always go with hymns of praise on our lips and emotions of joy in our heart.

The Lord indeed has done great things for us and to us and when we properly reflect on it, and begin to enumerate our blessings, we find ourselves overwhelmed with a sense of His generosity and kindness. And, blessed thought, the best is yet to come! We will soon enter into the company of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the hosts of the other departed saints, to say nothing of Christ Himself and "an innumerable company of angels." There our joys will never cease and sin will never annoy! "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psalm 103:2).
