"He had this testimony, that he pleased God" (Hebrews 11:5).

The true possessors of faith are the only ones who can please God (ver. 6), and even they can only please Him when they do the things He has commanded in His word. He will not settle for anything less than for things to be done exactly according to His instructions. He will give no sanction to that worship which deviates from the pattern He has given His people, and according to which their devotions are to be rendered. He will not accept less or more. Any additions to, or deletions from, His word are an affront to His wisdom and holiness and will be met with severe loss on the part of the guilty (See Rev. 22:18-19). God's way is the only right way, and those who think otherwise are on a collision course with disaster.

There are multitudes today suffering all manner of distresses, heartaches and woes simply because they have absolutely refused to adhere to the plain teaching of Christ. There are a great many emphatic declarations in His word that are met with stubborn defiance, even on the part of many who profess to be His most devoted followers. And then they think it strange when trouble comes that their faith is so weak and their strength is so small.

Men have a strong innate tendency to think that God will take no offense if they change His pattern a little here and there, or if they adopt their own order of worship---just so long as they view it as worship. But that is a grave error, to say nothing of being a willful act of rebellion. We may be certain that if it is not "according to the pattern showed thee" (Heb. 8:5) then it is not pleasing to God. Why should He ever give tokens of approval to that which is in direct disobedience to His command?

If we would have the same testimony that Enoch had, that we please God, then we must reverence Him and be willing in all things to conform our lives and activities to His revealed will. And for all our "instructions in righteousness" the Scriptures are a thorough furnisher unto all good works (II Tim. 3:16-17). Let us "search the Scriptures daily (Acts 17:11). They won't give us eternal life but they will guide us into those ways that please God.
