"I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing" (Romans 7:18)

You have no doubt heard it said that there is a little good in everybody, and I can see where those who are ignorant of what the Scriptures have to say on the matter would think so, but the truth is that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, good in those who have not been born of the Spirit of God. I realize that many people would revolt at such a statement, but I speak of the way God views unregenerate men---not the way others view them.

If the words of Paul are carefully examined it will be observed that he did not say there was no good within him, but he said there was no good "in his flesh". There was indeed good in him, for he had been born of the Spirit, but that good was not in his flesh. Our flesh, or our body, will remain a "vile body" until it is raised and fashioned like unto the glorious body of Christ (See Philippians 3:20-21). Paul referred to his natural body as "the body of this death," or, as we might say, "This body of death." The reason we live in a dying body is because it is a sinful body (See Romans 6:23). It is a corrupt body and will be sown, or buried, in corruption, but if we are a child of God it will be raised in incorruption (See I Cor. 15:42-44).

Those who have not been quickened by the Spirit of God into divine life have no principle of grace within their hearts. They have not been made partakers of the divine nature (See II Peter 1:4) and therefore they possess nothing but a fallen, corrupt nature, in which there is no good.

This is not to say that corrupt men cannot do anything that is deemed good in the eyes of the society around them, nor that they cannot do anything that issues in good to others, but they cannot do anything good in God's sight, for He knows their hearts and He knows that all they do is motivated in one way or another by the flesh. "So then they that are in the flesh (unborn spiritually) cannot please God" (Romans 8:8). "A corrupt tree cannot bring forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?" (James 3:11). Yes, there are some people in whom there is not even a little good. These are the kind Paul prayed to be delivered from (See II Thess. 3:2).
