"An inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven..." (I Peter 1:4). |

God's people take much comfort in the fact that a heavenly inheritance awaits them after this life. Among the glorious things that are said about this inheritance is that it is reserved for a specified people---those who are "kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation..." Both the power and faithfulness of God are concerned in this keeping of the saints, for the end is salvation, in ever case. Not one shall be lost. Not only is their inheritance reserved for them, but they are reserved unto it. It is reserved and they are kept. Nothing could be more sure than that all the saints will be ultimately conformed to the image of Christ, for it is this to which they have been predestinated (See Romans 8:29). Their inheritance is both undefiled and incorruptible. That is, it has never been defiled, and it can never be defiled. Incorruptible simply means it cannot be corrupted. It is impossible that it should lose the tiniest particle of its purity. Eternity is not long enough for it to be corrupted. It is safe and secure from any form of contamination. Those who inhabit it must be clothed with incorruption before they can be carried there (See I Cor. 15:53), so that they cannot corrupt it. Nothing impure can enter there. That is why it is necessary for their "vile body" to be "changed" and "fashioned like unto" the glorious body of Christ (See Philippians 3:21). Finally, their inheritance "fadeth not away." Thus when they leave this world they enter "into life eternal" (Matt. 25:46), a state of happiness that never ends. It is an "everlasting life." As Newton says, "When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we first begun." The joys there not only do not end, they don't even fade. They will remain constant and unchanging---eternally. This is a soul-cheering message to those who love the Lord and whose hope is in His mercy. |
