"I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed" (Matt. 3:6). |

All mankind would be ultimately ruined and doomed if it were not for the immutability of God, for if He were changeable like we are He would not put up with us for a day. We are capable of changing from a quiet and docile state of mind to one of agitation and anger in an instant of time. We are so capricious, inconsistent and moody that we could never, of ourselves, stay in favor with God for long at a time, if at all, and an eternal relationship with Him would be out of the question. Therefore, "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed" (Lam. 3:22). It is not because of any stability in us, but rather "because his compassions fail not." God chose His people in Christ before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4) "that (they) should be holy and without blame before him in love," and He has saved them and called them, not according to their works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given them in Christ Jesus before the world began (See II Tim. 1:9). This alone guarantees that they will not be consumed or wasted. The apostle confirms this very forcibly when he says he is confident of this very thing, "that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Phil. 1:6). He will not change His mind and leave off the work, even though His people are often unfaithful to Him, for if He did He would never complete the work in any of them. But "the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his" (II Tim. 2:19). Psalm 130:3 poses the question: "If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?" And sure it is that if God should keep account of the sins of His people so as to bring them up against them in the final day and impute those sins to them, then all of them would be lost. The whole human race would be lost. Thank God our salvation is by grace, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His unchangeable mercy and compassion! |
