"Unto them that look for him" (Heb. 9:28).

God's people look with sweet anticipation for the return of Christ. They do so because they, as did Abraham, "look for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God" (Heb. 11:10). They do so because they realize that they are "strangers and pilgrims on the earth" (ver. 13). They do so because Christ is precious unto them (I Peter 2:7), and they desire to be conformed to His image. They do so because they know that when He shall appear He will change their vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His own glorious body (See Phil. 3:20-21). They look for Him because He is their soul's chief delight and they long to be with Him, to be like Him, and to be satisfied.

It comforts me to consider that whether the second coming of our Lord is near or not, I will be with Him soon, for I have reached the evening time of life. If I should live to be eighty-years-old, it would only be seventeen more years before my soul would take flight and leave this vile world behind. But since we have no promise of tomorrow, none of us know but what we may breathe our last breath momentarily, or but what Christ may return before the next tick of the clock. Thus we always live---not knowing but what we may, the next moment, be in eternity. Indeed, "What manner of persons ought we to be in all holy conversation and godliness" (II Peter 3:11).

The subject of the second coming of Christ was near and dear to the heart of the apostle Paul and he mentioned it often. It is interesting to note that in his first epistle to the Thessalonians he ends each of the five chapters with a reference to the coming of Christ. It is a subject that often occupies my mind, and I have long been looking for the Lord's return. Many years of waiting have not weakened my faith in the least that one sweet day Christ will return to gather His people to Himself. For the saints, what a day that will be!
