"Lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God" (II Tim. 3:4). |

The description the apostle gives of "the last days" seems to fit our own present day very well; but by "the last days" I do not know whether Paul is speaking of that period shortly before the return of Christ, or of the same "last days" mentioned in Acts 2:17, Heb. 1:2, or of the "last time" spoken of by John (I John 2:18). Job said Christ (the Redeemer) would stand upon the earth "at the latter day" (Job 19:25), and there is disagreement among Bible readers as to whether this refers to the gospel day, (age) or to the second coming of Christ. Whichever way that may be, He has already stood upon the earth in the latter day, because we have been in the latter day ever since His first advent. Whether He will "stand upon the earth" when He comes again does not seem relevant to me. The thing that appeals to me most is the fact that His people will be caught up together in the clouds, to meet Him in the air, and so shall they ever be with Him (See I Thess. 4:17). I am sure that in every age of time there have been those who have met the description given in II Tim. 3:1-5. However, it seems to me that the things mentioned there apply to a time when such characteristics will be prevalent throughout society. It should be our concern that we not be found among those who are guilty of these things, for they constitute a list of iniquities that are very abhorrent to God. How awful is the condition of an individual who loves worldly pleasures more than he loves God, to say nothing of being guilty of all the other things mentioned in the text. It seems to me that loving pleasures more than loving God is a product of self-love. It stems from a desire to fulfill the lusts of the flesh or the selfish cravings of carnal nature. The world is full of such pleasures, and here in America that is true on a much larger scale than ever before. There are endless temptations to lure God's people away from the strait and narrow way that leads to life. There is only one other way, and it leads to destruction. May the Lord help us to avoid it as we would the plague. |
