"That we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men" (II Thess. 3:2).

The apostles of Christ had not been given a commission to go to ungodly men with the gospel, but rather they knew that "all men have not faith," and therefore they prayed, and desired others to pray, that they might be delivered from such characters. According to popular religion it is precisely these kind of people that need to hear the gospel so that they may have an opportunity to "get saved." However, as strange as it may appear to some, such an idea is never advanced in the Scriptures. The "things of the Spirit of God" are foolishness to unreasonable and wicked men, and they can neither know them nor receive them, because they do not possess spiritual discernment or understanding (See I Cor. 2:14). Herein lies one of the main fallacies of arminianism. It argues that all men have the ability to exercise faith if they will only choose to do so; that they can believe on Christ if only the gospel is preached to them. But this is clearly disproven by many Scriptures, such as the one just referenced. Popular religionists will use such scriptures as Matt. 11:28 and apply them to all the unsaved, but that is a very obvious misapplication. It does not say, "Come unto me all ye that are ungodly and I will give you eternal life," but rather it says, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heaven laden, and I will give you rest." This does not describe those who are dead in sin, but it describes those in whose hearts the Lord has already performed a work of grace, and it tells them that Christ is the answer to whatever burdens of guilt, fear or distress they are laden with. No, the gospel was never intended for wicked men, but for God's people who have a hunger and thirst for righteousness; those who have been stripped of self-righteousness and made "poor in spirit." "The poor have the gospel preached to them" (See Matt. 11:5 & Luke 7:22). No man can come to Christ unless he has been thus drawn by the Spirit (See John 6:44). The gospel does not bring life and immortality, but it brings those things to light. And they can only be brought to light in those who already have them. The gospel feeds and instructs the living, it does not raise the dead.
